Organic refers to methods of growing and processing foods that rely on the
earth's natural resources. Pests and weeds are managed using earth-friendly
means such as beneficial insectsand mechanical controls. Organic farmers
work to build natural
nutrients in soil which help fertilize plants without relianceon synthetic
fertilizers.
Offers food produced within nature's own balanced and fertile system.
Products labeled "certified organic" have been grown and processed according to strict standards. CCOF annually inspects farms and facilities to ensure that no harmful chemicals have been used for at least three years, that foods are processed using sustainable methods, and that growers and processors keep detailed records of their practices. The 2000 CCOF handbook contains all of our standards that paved the way for organic farming legislation like the California Foods Act of 1990. CCOF was the first organization to certify farms in North America, continually leading theway by promoting sustainable agriculture since 1973.
